Rochester is located in Monroe County just south of Lake Ontario. Neighboring communities are Irondequoit, Brighton and Charlotte. The Genesee River runs through Rochester, connecting the city with the ports of Lake Ontario. Residents, on the other hand, enjoy the views and recreational activities provided by the Erie Canal, Lake Ontario and Genesee River.
The city is comprised of more than 20 defined neighborhoods, each with its own personality and style. The neighborhood of Charlotte, for example, is known for its sandy shoreline along the lake and its close-knit, family atmosphere. Maplewood and East Avenue are characterized by elegant mansions situated on sprawling lots. Then there is South Wedge, a community with its roots in the discipline and perseverance of the working class. Other Rochester communities include Corn Hill, Culver-Winton-Main, Ellwanger Berry, Neighborhood of the Arts, Park-Meigs, Wadsworth Square and Upper Monroe. These communities typically have a neighborhood committee that actively works to bring residents together and improve the quality of life. Rochester residents, by and large, enjoy volunteering and getting involved in their community.
Locals are also known for staying active outdoors when the weather permits. In the warmer summer and fall months, you’ll find people running and riding bicycles along the lake and canal. Boating, canoeing and kayaking are also popular. For golfers, there are at least 11 courses within Rochester’s 35 square miles, and about 70 more in the surrounding region. Oak Hill Country Club is on the PGA tour.
Annual festivals and community events also keep residents busy. In the summertime, Rochester hosts weekend festivals almost continually. Events like the Monroe County Fair, Sterling Renaissance Festival, Rochester International Jazz Festival, High Falls Film Festival, and Naples Grape Festival are enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. The Park Avenue Summer Arts Festival annually attracts over 250,000 people, while the burgeoning Finger Lakes Wine Region offers tours that are steadily gaining acclaim among wine enthusiasts.
In the winter, local ski resorts become the destinations of choice. Some options include Brantling Ski and Snowboard Center, Bristol Mountain, Holiday Valley and Swain Ski and Snowboard Center. Rochester also has an indoor ice rink.
If you prefer to get out of the cold, try visiting one of the many museums in the city. Topics to learn about include Victorian dolls, the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse, Jell-O, railroad transportation and the National Toy Hall of Fame. The Strong Museum and Memorial Art Gallery provide excellent children’s programming. Rochester is also home to the New York Museum of Transportation and the Rochester Museum and Science Center.
Art aficionados will appreciate the dozens of troupes, music groups and community and professional theater groups that provide an array of dance, live music and playhouse performances in the city. Notable organizations include the Eastman School of Music, Geva Theater, Rochester City Ballet and Rochester Broadway Theatre League. Home to the late George Eastman, founder of Eastman Kodak, Rochester has an active film scene. The Little Theatre, as well as the Dryden and Curtis Theatres, play host to art and independent film screenings year-round.
